Upward Bound (UB) is a federally-funded program that provides academic assistance to Anaheim, Katella, and Loara High School students who are college-bound. The program helps student participants develop the necessary study skills to succeed by providing academic tutoring, peer mentoring, college information overview, and a variety of other services.

UCI Upward Bound is in search of current UCI undergraduates to serve as after-school tutors Monday through Friday during the academic year. All tutoring takes place in the City of Anaheim.

Position Duties:

  • The ability to work and relate with high school students from a variety of low-income, cultural and academic background
  • Enthusiasm, imagination, patience, flexibility, good communication and leadership skills
  • A genuine interest in working with high students
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and are committed to a positive college-going culture
  • Academic support includes the following subject areas:
    • mathematics
    • laboratory science
    • composition/literature
    • language other than English such as Spanish
    • other high school subject requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2.8 UC GPA (cumulative)
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (in desired subject area)
  • General knowledge of subject(s) to answer questions and help in activities designed to develop their general education skills and improve mastery of course material
  • Understanding of electronic mail and computer applications including Google Apps, Remind, and Khan Academy
  • UCI undergraduate, 2nd year or higher academic standing
  • UCI students receiving Work Study as part of their Financial Aid award (preferred)
  • Upon employment offer, must be willing to undergo TB testing and LiveScan (background check)

ACADEMIC YEAR SALARY RANGE: $33 per hour (instruction and preparation), 10 hrs p/month (Sept-April)

SUMMER SALARY RANGE: $33 per hour (instruction and preparation), 20 hrs p/week (4 weeks; June-July)

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT: Upward Bound Program/Center for Educational Partnerships

Program Description:

Upward Bound at University of California, Irvine is a federally funded TRIO program (U.S. Department of Education) that provides educational assistance; academic advisement; college and career planning; educational and cultural field trips; and tutoring to low-income, first generation high school students. Upward Bound participants are uniquely chosen to participate in the program and have been selected for their motivation to succeed in school and attend post-secondary education.

The Upward Bound Academic component consists of monthly Saturday Sessions during the academic year. Upward Bound participants are bused from the City of Anaheim to CFEP/UC Irvine on nine pre-selected Saturdays beginning in September and concluding in April. Saturday Sessions consist of three hours of instruction with the remaining time utilized for class preparation, grading (if any), or feedback on senior-related work or student-related classwork. The Writing Instructor works with students of all writing levels but essentially preparing them for college-level writing. In previous years, writing instructors have worked with UBlies focusing on English Composition, Literature, Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading; all in preparation for college-level writing demands. Upward Bound is open to various ideas on writing since all of our students could participate in the writing session.

The Upward Bound Summer component consists of four weeks of academic classes in four subject areas (Math, Science, Spanish, and Writing) Upward Bound participants will be taking in the Fall. This academic instruction takes place at Loara High School in the City of Anaheim.

The Summer Writing Instructor position would need to be prepared to work with students of all writing levels but essentially preparing them for college-level writing demands. In previous summers, specific books or themes were chosen. Again, this position would allow the instructor to be as creative as they would like to be during the four weeks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in the appropriate discipline for high school coursework
  • California Teaching Credential with single-subject credentials and a minimum two–three years of teaching experience in the subject area
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting UB participants
  • Formal training or work experience related to activities, programs, and services that:
    improve academic performance as measured by GPAs and on standardized tests (Academic Performance Objectives), AND/OR improve high school retention and graduation rates (Graduation with Regular Objective) and promote the completion of a rigorous secondary school program of study (Graduation with RSSPS Objective).

Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Upward Bound, the specific duties and responsibilities of the Summer Instructor shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and plan a year-long course agenda for academic school year in addition to a (separate) six-week summer course for high school students in accordance with California Content Standards
  • Prepare and submit: subject syllabi, weekly lesson plans, and weekly participant evaluation reports
  • Provide an assessment of participants’ academic strengths, progress and recommendations for further improvement
  • Assign a midterm and final letter grade with brief written evaluation of participants’ academic strengths and weaknesses
  • Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and improvement in academic capabilities
  • Maintain neat, up-to-date, accurate, and complete records of student progress
  • Meet with UB Director and/or Assistant Director weekly to ascertain participants’ progress as it relates to comprehension of course material, address any concerns as well as review with tutors assigned to course daily/weekly
  • Responsible for general safety and welfare of Upward Bound participants
    Implement and enforce all Upward Bound Program rules with each participant fairly

— Apply to be a Summer Student Assistant/Residential Teaching Assistant (RTA) —

POSITION: UCI Upward Bound Summer Student Assistant, also called Residential Teaching Assistants (RTAs). RTAs serve as residential teaching assistants to current high school students throughout the six-week program. Candidates with a background in college preparation, summer camps and tutoring preferred (see attached flyer)

SALARY RANGE: $15.50 per hour; hours vary and may run up to 40+ hours each week

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT: Upward Bound Program/Center for Educational Partnerships

Program Description:

Summer program activities and academic support services are approximately six weeks in June and July so that UB participants have an opportunity to experience college requirements and culture. Over the course of the summer, UB participants engage in a variety of activities such as academic enrichment courses, mentorship activities, college admissions workshops, and motivational speakers. The academic enrichment courses are in the subject areas of Science, Math, Writing, and Spanish. They are designed to give the students a head start in school for the following school year.

Summer session is divided into two segments: Commuter and Residential. The commuter segment will take place in the City of Anaheim, at Loara High School. The residential segment of three nights and four days will take place at UCI. It is designed to give students a glimpse of college life: attend classes in university facilities, live in the dorms, have roommates, and eat dorm food.  In addition, college tours are provided and give participants an opportunity to visit college campuses in the Southern California area and compare campuses, environments, programs, and services from each college/university. Hours are to be determined, however, Tutor/Assistants do work a full-time variable schedule for the six weeks.

Under the guidance and supervision of the UB Director and Assistant Director, Academic Tutor/Assistants oversee a group of students, ensure program rules and polices are being followed: in the residence halls, Loara High School in Anaheim, and other locations on the UCI campus.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must participate in all scheduled training sessions
  • Must be willing to become First Aid and CPR certified
  • Must participate in all summer program activities
  • Must have the maturity and responsibility to oversee high-school students and uphold program policies and procedures
  • Must be available to reside in the residence halls during the designated work hours
  • Sophomore or Junior status is desirable
  • Background in tutoring or working with high school students preferred
  • Prior residence Hall experience is desirable

Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage high school students in a variety of activities designed to develop
    general education skills and college eligibility
  • Work with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
  • Encourage/support students in a positive and enriching learning environment
  • Provide computer assistance with educational software programs in related subjects
  • Coordinate academic and study skill presentations and monitor student progress
  • Be engaged during designated work hours during commuter, residential, and campus visit weeks
  • Uphold UB Summer Program rules and regulations at the Anaheim high school location during the commuter weeks, in the residence halls and on UCI premises during the residential week
  • Coordinate team project with assigned students (if applicable)
  • Coordinate all recreational activities
  • Assist UB Director, Academic Advisor, and Instructors with program implementation
  • Assist UB Director and Academic Advisor with disseminating and collecting all necessary paperwork and materials
  • Assist with assigned residence hall suite overseeing 10-12 students
  • Take action in emergency situations and contact appropriate people in the case of an emergency
  • Serve as a positive role model
